Social Media Model Release Form Template

Social media use breaks the assumptions of a classic release. Content gets re-shared by strangers, boosted as paid ads, stitched and remixed under platform terms the photographer doesn’t control. A release that only contemplates "publication" leaves all of that ambiguous — and brand deals fall apart over ambiguity.

This template adds an explicit social-media clause: organic and paid use on the major platforms, plus the model’s acknowledgment that platform users can re-share under each platform’s terms. AI training stays denied by default, which matters more than ever for content feeding the social firehose.

What the release says

I, the undersigned model named below ("Model"), confirm that I am of legal age and have the right to grant this release. In exchange for good and valuable consideration, the receipt and sufficiency of which I acknowledge, I grant the photographer named below ("Photographer") and any third parties acting with the Photographer's authorization the rights described in this release.

I grant the Photographer the irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free right to use, reproduce, distribute, display, edit, adapt, and publish photographs, video, and other recordings of me ("Materials") created on the shoot date stated below, for the purposes described under "Scope of Use" below.

I waive any right to inspect or approve the finished Materials, and I waive any right to royalties or other compensation arising from the use of the Materials within the granted Scope of Use. The Photographer retains all copyright in the Materials.

AI training rights: Unless the Scope of Use below explicitly grants AI / machine-learning training rights, I do NOT grant the Photographer or any third party the right to use the Materials to train, fine-tune, or otherwise feed any artificial-intelligence model, dataset, or system, and any such use is expressly prohibited.

I release the Photographer and their assigns from any claims arising from use of the Materials within the granted Scope of Use, including without limitation claims for libel, defamation, invasion of privacy, and right of publicity, except for use that is materially false or that defames me.

This release is binding on me, my heirs, and my legal representatives. I have read this release before signing and I understand it.

Social media use: the granted Scope of Use includes publication of the Materials on social media platforms (including Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, X, and successors), in both organic posts and paid promotion, and I acknowledge that platform users may re-share the Materials under each platform’s terms of service.

Common questions

Does a release cover paid promotion of the post?
Only if it says so. Boosting a post is advertising — a use most generic releases never mention. This template grants both organic and paid social use explicitly.
What about other people re-sharing the content?
No release can stop platform-level re-sharing — it’s baked into every platform’s terms of service. What this template does is record the model’s acknowledgment of that reality, so re-shares can’t later be framed as unauthorized use.
Do influencers need releases from people in their content?
Yes — the same rules apply. If a recognizable friend appears in sponsored content, the brand’s legal team will (or should) ask for a release. UGC pipelines are exactly where missing releases surface late and expensively.
